TOKYO, Jan 10 (News On Japan) - Over the past year, the consumer price index in Tokyo's 23 wards rose by 3.0% compared to the previous year, marking the highest increase in 41 years.
Excluding volatile fresh food items, the index reached 105.0, a 3.0% increase year-on-year. This is the first time in 41 years, since the impact of the second oil shock in 1982, that the annual increase rate has reached the 3% range.
The primary cause of this increase was the successive rise in food prices. Excluding fresh foods, the cost of food items rose by 8.0%, the highest rate in 47 years.
According to Teikoku Databank, last year saw price increases in 32,396 food items. For this year, it is anticipated that there will be price increases in 10,000 to 15,000 food items.
