TOKYO, Jul 15 (News On Japan) - The cost of making a single serving of curry rice in Japan has reached its highest point in the past decade.
According to an independent estimate by the private research firm Teikoku Databank, based on statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the cost per serving of curry rice in May was 323 yen, the highest in the past ten years.
Breaking down the costs, the ingredients such as meat and vegetables are the most expensive at 200 yen, followed by rice at 94 yen, curry roux at 25 yen, and utilities at 4 yen.
The price increase is influenced by the depreciation of the yen, which has led to a continuous rise in the cost of imported beef, and unfavorable weather conditions that have kept vegetable prices high.
Rice prices have also increased due to a recent shortage of rice, leading to higher retail prices.
The vegetable price outlook (July) released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries predicts that prices for carrots, potatoes, and onions will remain above average.
