TOKYO, Jul 16 (News On Japan) - Despite the rainy season not yet ending, the number of applications for insurance to cover the risk of heatstroke in Japan is increasing at an unprecedented speed.
The 'Heatstroke Consolation Money Insurance,' launched in April by a subsidiary of Sumitomo Life, covers treatment costs and hospitalization expenses due to heatstroke.
This product is available exclusively through the cashless payment app 'PayPay.'
The previous highest number of applications was around 63,000 in 2022 when the product was first launched. However, as of July 11 this year, despite many areas still being in the rainy season, there have already been over 65,000 applications, setting a new record.
On July 7, Shizuoka City recorded a temperature of 40℃ for the first time this year. According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, between July 1 and 7, 9,105 people across the country were taken to emergency medical facilities due to heatstroke.
