TOKYO, Aug 15 (News On Japan) - Japan is facing a nationwide shortage of dry ice, which is causing significant disruptions, particularly in the food industry. Ice cream shops like Baskin-Robbins had to temporarily limit the amount of dry ice provided for takeout, reducing it from two hours' worth to just 30 minutes due to supply constraints.
The shortage stems from a decrease in CO2 production, a byproduct of oil refining, which has been exacerbated by the rise of electric vehicles and increased demand for dry ice during the intense summer heat.
Restaurants and other businesses are struggling to secure dry ice, with some even willing to pay higher prices to meet their needs.
The situation has led to concerns that dry ice may become a luxury item as shortages persist.
