TOKYO, Jun 04 (News On Japan) - Shibuya’s once-in-a-century redevelopment is entering its final phase, according to a new announcement by Tokyu Corporation. The massive overhaul of the Shibuya Station area began in earnest with the opening of the Shibuya Hikarie skyscraper in 2012 and has since involved major upgrades to the station and surrounding pedestrian infrastructure.
The project has often been described as a "once-in-a-century" transformation due to its scale and impact on the heart of Tokyo.
According to the latest plan, by fiscal 2030, a network of pedestrian routes will be completed to connect the east, west, north, and south sides of Shibuya at both ground level and via elevated decks. In fiscal 2031, the central and west towers of Shibuya Scramble Square will be finished.
The final stage will be completed in fiscal 2034 with the redevelopment of the iconic Hachiko Square, marking the full conclusion of the large-scale urban renewal surrounding Shibuya Station.
