Wakayama, Aug 04 (News On Japan) - Rice harvesting has already begun in Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, the southernmost town on Japan’s main island of Honshu. In some areas of Kushimoto, early harvesting is carried out around this time of year to avoid damage from typhoons, which tend to approach during the late summer season.
While some rice crops are reportedly growing more slowly this year due to heat following an early end to the rainy season, the harvest overall appears promising.
"Last year was a poor crop, but this year looks much better," said rice farmer Wataru Sakamoto.
The harvested rice will be used in local school lunches for elementary and junior high schools.
