TOKYO, Sep 09 (News On Japan) - The Liberal Democratic Party’s presidential election to choose a successor to Prime Minister Ishiba will be held on October 4th. The party’s election management committee decided on September 9th to officially announce the race on September 22nd, with lawmakers casting their votes in early October.
The decision is expected to be formally approved at the General Council meeting on September 10th.
At its meeting on September 9th, the LDP also decided to adopt a “full-scale” election format that includes not only parliamentary votes but also ballots from party members and supporters across the country.
The contest will be fought over a total of 590 votes, consisting of 295 from lawmakers and 295 from rank-and-file members.
After the meeting, Election Committee Chairman Ichiro Aisawa told reporters, “This presidential election will mark the first step in the LDP’s revival, framed as a fresh start for the party.”
Aisawa also indicated that rules for the race will be presented on September 10th, including requests that candidates refrain from distributing large numbers of their books or autographed papers and avoid sending out mass mailings of pamphlets.
