TOKYO, Sep 30 (News On Japan) - NTT, which had previously announced plans to gradually phase out fixed-line metal cables over the next decade, said at a briefing on September 30th that it will raise basic charges from next fiscal year to temporarily maintain the service.
The monthly fee for household plans will rise by 220 yen, bringing the total to 2,090 yen, marking the first increase in 30 years.
At the same time, NTT outlined measures to ease the burden on users, including waiving the initial construction costs for switching away from metal lines and allowing continued use of existing telephones even after migration. These steps are intended to reduce the impact on households as the company balances maintaining aging infrastructure with preparing for a transition to newer technologies.
