HOKKAIDO, Dec 18 (News On Japan) - Electric vehicles, which run without gasoline and emit no carbon dioxide while driving, are drawing fresh attention as two of the world’s biggest manufacturers from the United States and China move into Hokkaido one after another.
With its expansive sunroof and a large monitor installed in the driver’s seat, the vehicles emphasize a futuristic look and advanced functions that are central to the appeal of EVs.
Katayama Yuki, a reporter, said, "By pressing a button, the driver can adjust it to their preferred position, and when you step on the accelerator, the car picks up speed smoothly and with a refined feel."
China’s leading EV maker BYD is now making a full-scale push into Hokkaido, highlighting its advanced battery technology and design.
Higashidera Atsuki, president of BYD Auto Japan, said, "More battery EVs are being developed so they can be used safely and reliably even during winter in cold northern regions, and I hope people see BYD as a manufacturer that is at the forefront of these technologies."
At roughly the same time, U.S. EV giant Tesla also opened its first store in Hokkaido.
Hashimoto Tomonori, president of Tesla Japan, said, "EVs are already being used in cold regions with no concerns at all. Once people take a test drive, they end up buying one. One hundred percent."
As EV adoption remains limited in cold climates, attention is now focused on what strategies these two American and Chinese giants will pursue as they seek to cultivate a new market in Hokkaido, a region some industry players are calling a ‘blue ocean’ for future growth.
