TOKYO - Tokyo has unveiled the design for a major redevelopment of the plaza outside Shinjuku Station's west exit, with a landmark tree, water-play area and event space planned as part of a transformation centered on "greenery, light and people" that is scheduled for completion in 2035.
About 3 million people use Shinjuku Station each day, and redevelopment work on the west exit plaza has been underway since March 2022.
The area has traditionally been designed primarily around automobile traffic, but the Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to transform it into a public space emphasizing greenery, natural light and pedestrian use.
The metropolitan government released the concept design on September 4.
A landmark tree will be planted in the center of the plaza. The tree will initially stand about 15 meters tall and is ultimately expected to grow to around 30 meters, creating a shaded area where people can rest.
The redevelopment will also include an area where children can play in water during the summer, as well as a space that can be used for events.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2035.
