Jul 04 (NHK) - North Korea's state-run media say the country has carried out its first successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
The media made what it called an "especially important announcement" on Tuesday afternoon.
They say the country's leader Kim Jong Un supervised the launch.
Earlier in the day, the US Pacific Command said the North launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile, not an ICBM.
The North fired the missile on Tuesday morning near Kusong on the country's west coast.
Japan's government says the missile apparently flew for about 40 minutes before landing in Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone in the Sea of Japan.
