Jul 17 (NHK) - Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have watched volunteers hoisting sails on the iconic Japanese sailboat, the Nippon Maru.
The Imperial couple visited Yokohama Port, south of Tokyo, on Monday, a national holiday known as Marine Day.
The Nippon Maru was built in 1930 and traveled the world for more than 5 decades training sailors. It is now anchored in Yokohama and open to the public.
During Monday's event, about 100 volunteers followed orders to climb masts measuring up to 50 meters. After taking up position, they shouted "congratulations on Marine Day," waved yellow caps and saluted.
