Trump: Abe's wife doesn't speak English

Jul 21 (NHK) - US President Donald Trump says the wife of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe doesn't speak English.

Trump made the remarks about Akie Abe in an interview with the New York Times.

He was seated next to her at a dinner of the G20 summit in Germany earlier this month.

Trump said she is a "terrific woman," but that she doesn't speak English.

A reporter asked him, "Like, nothing?" The president responded, "Like, not 'hello'." He added that there was an interpreter for Japanese, and communication would have been even tougher otherwise.
