Feb 20 (NHK) - Japanese municipalities with large populations of foreign residents are planning to provide interpretation services for them at coronavirus vaccination sites.
Yamato City in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo, has about 7,300 residents from more than 80 countries and territories.
The city plans to start the services in 20 languages at one of its sites in June, after inoculations of senior citizens are completed. The languages include English, Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese and Tagalog.
Non-Japanese who want to use the services need to make a reservation.
In adjacent Ayase City, foreign residents account for about 5 percent of the population, the highest among all cities in Kanagawa.
City officials plan to use simple Japanese for vaccination tickets and the accompanying leaflets that will include an explanation.
The officials say they will use tablets at vaccination venues to enable foreigners to consult doctors remotely via interpreters.
