University of Tokyo Raises Tuition Fees for First Time in 20 Years

TOKYO, Sep 25 (News On Japan) - The University of Tokyo has officially decided to increase tuition by approximately 110,000 yen for incoming undergraduate students starting next academic year, bringing the total to 642,960 yen.

The University of Tokyo announced its decision on September 24th to raise tuition for new undergraduates by about 110,000 yen, resulting in a total fee of 642,960 yen.

This marks the first tuition increase in 20 years.

As for the master’s program, tuition fees will also rise starting in the 2029 academic year, while fees for doctoral programs will remain unchanged.

In conjunction with the tuition increase, the university plans to expand financial aid, including broadening the eligibility for tuition waivers.

University President Teruo Fujii stated, "We will continue to provide explanations to students and faculty members moving forward."
