Two men linked to Ghosn's escape arrive in Japan

Mar 02, 2021 (NHK) - Two Americans accused of helping former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn flee Japan have arrived at Narita Airport near Tokyo, after being extradited by US authorities. Michael Taylor, a former Green Beret, and his adult son Peter face charges, including enabling a suspect to escape.

Tokyo prosecutors have arrested the two men. Their flight took off from Boston on Monday.

The Taylors are suspected of helping smuggle Ghosn out of Japan in 2019, enabling him to make his way to Lebanon via Turkey. The former Nissan chairman had been awaiting trial for alleged financial misconduct. He was out on bail at the time.

Japanese prosecutors obtained arrest warrants for the Taylors in January of last year. They were arrested by US authorities in Massachusetts last May.

Their lawyers filed a petition to block the extradition, arguing that the two men would be treated unfairly. But US courts turned down the request.

Ghosn remains in Lebanon, despite an international wanted notice from Interpol. Officials in Beirut say he is allowed to stay in the country, where he has citizenship.

Last month, three other men were convicted in Turkey for helping him escape.
