Japan to issue 'vaccine passports' from July

Jun 17 (NHK) - The Japanese government plans to allow municipalities to issue "vaccine passports" -- documents certifying coronavirus vaccinations -- starting next month.

The European Union is considering introducing vaccine certificates. Business leaders and others in Japan want such certificates to be issued to people who travel abroad as soon as possible.

The government says that by late July, local government offices will start issuing the certificates, based on vaccination records, to people with valid passports.

The documents will show the traveler's name, nationality, passport number and vaccination date.

The government says it may also issue digital versions of the certificates that can be applied for online.
