Ohtani blasts 23rd homer to reach career high

Jun 22 (NHK) - In Major League Baseball, Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Angels hit his 23rd home run of the season on Sunday, a career high for the Japanese two-way player.

Ohtani started as designated hitter batting in the number two spot in a game against the Detroit Tigers at the Angels' home stadium in Anaheim.

He connected for a two-run shot in the fifth inning that put him in a tie for the major league lead in homers with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ohtani has now belted six home runs in six games since June 15.

On Thursday, he earned his third win of the season when he went six innings in a game against the Tigers.

Pedro Martinez, a former Boston Red Sox pitcher and Hall of Famer with 219 wins in the Major Leagues, tweeted on Sunday that Ohtani "is the outstanding athlete you don't see every day."

Martinez tweeted, "He's the complete package in one player." He added, "You can take him to Hollywood and he could become a movie star."
