Jun 29 (NHK) - Narita Airport will have dedicated lanes in the terminals for people arriving for the Tokyo Olympic Games as an anti-infection measure against the coronavirus. The lanes will open on Thursday, July 1, when athletes and staff begin arriving in large numbers.
The need to prevent infections was highlighted as two of the nine-member Ugandan national team tested positive after arrival in Japan on June 19.
Dedicated quarantine, immigration, and customs lanes for athletes and officials will be set up in accordance with the Games' Playbook, which outlines anti-infection rules.
A pick-up area for chartered buses will also be established so athletes and others do not come in contact with general airport users.
To create space, the airport operator will reopen part of a terminal building that had been temporarily closed amid the dwindling number of travelers.
Over 30,000 Olympic athletes and officials are expected to pass through Narita Airport.
Narita International Airport Corporation President Tamura Akihiko said he wants to make sure quarantine officials and the organizing committee can implement necessary measures at the airport.
