Japan's population declines for 12th straight year

Aug 05 (NHK) - Japan's population has fallen for a 12th straight year. The population stood at over 123.84 million on January 1. That's down about 428,000 from the previous year.

The number of births in Japan last year totaled 843,000, the lowest since the survey began in 1968. The number of deaths was roughly 1.37 million, the second most on record.

The country's natural population decline, or the number of deaths surpassing that of births, has increased for 13 straight years.

The fall in last year's population was down more than 70,000 from that of the previous year, which saw a record fall of more than 500,000. The number of people who moved out of the country was less than half that of the average year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The number of foreign residents of Japan stood at over 2.81 million, down 50,000 from the previous year. The drop was the first in seven years, as fewer people moved into the country from abroad because of the pandemic.
