Aug 12 (Japan by Food) - Phoebe learns kintsugi art, meaning “golden joinery,” a technique of repairing Japanese pottery.
She is hosted by Takeshita Shigeo, the 4th generation owner of Utsuwa Omusubi, and Takeshita Yuka, who teaches Phoebe how to fix broken pottery that she brought with her. Shigeo-san mentions that the practice of kintsugi pottery is linked to “mottainai,” the Japanese expression of regret over waste. Oftentimes, broken pottery ends up in landfills, as it is not burnable, but by repairing it with kintsugi art, the pottery gains more value and is “remade.”
