TOKYO, Oct 29 (News On Japan) - The Japan Mobility Show opened on October 29th, marking the start of Japan’s premier automotive exhibition, where foreign manufacturers are stepping up their entry into the country’s growing electric vehicle (EV) market.
Toyota Motor Chairman Akio Toyoda said, “We want to nurture this as a brand that conveys the spirit of Japan — Japanese pride — to the world.”
Toyota unveiled a coupe version of its flagship Century. The company positioned Century as a brand above Lexus, featuring Edo-style metal engraving on the emblem and Nishijin-ori fabrics on the seats, highlighting the craftsmanship of traditional Japanese manufacturing.
Foreign automakers are also expanding their presence in the EV segment. China’s BYD introduced an electric mini vehicle, signaling its entry into Japan’s kei car market, which accounts for about 40 percent of new car sales. Taiwan’s Foxconn subsidiary Sharp revealed plans to launch an EV by fiscal 2027, marking its move from consumer electronics into mobility.
One exhibit featured a simulated experience of riding in a flying car, allowing visitors to feel as though they were soaring above Tokyo as futuristic cityscapes and maps were projected around them.
Public admission for the Japan Mobility Show begins on October 31st.
