Hidden Camera Detectors Deployed at Mito Schools

MITO, Mar 16, 2026 (News On Japan) - Mito City began deploying hidden camera detection devices at all municipal elementary schools, junior high schools, and compulsory education schools on March 17th as incidents of secret filming inside schools continue to occur across Japan, including cases reported within the city itself.

The device introduced by the city is a “hidden camera detector” designed to locate covert recording equipment. The detector emits a red light, and on March 17th administrators from local elementary and junior high schools tested the equipment.

When the red light emitted by the detector reflects off a camera lens, a bright point appears at the center, allowing the user to identify the location of the camera. The device can also detect electromagnetic waves emitted by cameras, making it possible to locate hidden devices even when they are concealed.

With incidents of voyeuristic filming in schools increasing nationwide, and similar cases occurring in Mito, the city has begun distributing one detector to each municipal elementary school, junior high school, and compulsory education school starting March 17th. Officials hope the move will help deter hidden-camera crimes within school facilities.
