Advanced AI Robots Gain Humanlike Movement

TOKYO, Apr 10 (News On Japan) - Humanoid AI robots, evolving at an astonishing pace, are now demonstrating not only remarkable athletic ability but also increasingly delicate and humanlike movements, as the latest generation of machines begins to move closer to everyday life.

At an AI exhibition held in Tokyo this week, visitors were captivated by robots capable of high-speed quadrupedal movement, combining slender designs with surprising durability, as developers highlighted their potential use in tackling social challenges such as deterring bears by equipping the machines with speakers and flashing lights to scare them back into the mountains.

Particular attention, however, is being directed toward bipedal humanoid robots, often described as “physical AI,” which integrate advanced cognitive processing with physical movement, enabling them to perceive their surroundings through sensors while independently making decisions and executing actions.

During demonstrations, robots performed smooth twist-step dances and synchronized movements with humans, collecting motion data to further refine their learning, illustrating how rapidly the technology is advancing through continuous data accumulation and software updates.

A newly opened research and development facility in Tokyo’s Shibuya district, Japan’s first dedicated center for humanoid AI robots, is bringing together machines from around the world, where engineers are studying practical applications ranging from entertainment to daily assistance.

Although still undergoing training, some robots displayed moments of imperfection and even fatigue-like behavior, giving them an unexpectedly human quality, as researchers continue to accelerate development amid intensifying global competition in AI technology.

Experts note that Japan’s strength in industrial data could play a key role in advancing real-world implementation, allowing the country to pursue its own path by leveraging vast amounts of operational data gathered from factories and society.

Beyond physical agility, humanoid robots are also beginning to demonstrate practical skills such as cooking, raising questions about why humanlike form is necessary, with developers pointing to psychological affinity and ease of interaction as key advantages, as well as the compatibility with environments designed for human movement, such as homes and factories.

Developers say that human-shaped robots are easier for people to understand and feel attached to, while also allowing smoother operation within existing infrastructure, combining both emotional and functional benefits.

Looking ahead, humanoid AI robots are expected to expand into customer service roles and household assistance, with the prospect of robots helping with daily chores no longer a distant vision, but an emerging reality reminiscent of science fiction worlds.

The growing presence of AI robots is also fostering new forms of social interaction, as users gather with their robotic companions at community events, highlighting how these machines are beginning to shape not only industry but also human relationships, while even joining in entertainment moments, such as accompanying live singing performances with rhythmic movements.
