NAGOYA - Nagoya City has begun individual consultations with disability advocacy groups over accessibility plans for the proposed wooden reconstruction of Nagoya Castle's main tower, as the two sides remain divided over how people with disabilities should be able to move between floors.
The city is seeking to install a vertical lifting system in the reconstructed tower, while disability groups are calling for the installation of a large elevator.
With the two sides continuing to hold differing positions, the city aims to present an overall barrier-free plan, including the lifting equipment, by around February 2027.
Nagoya has also started conducting separate hearings with disability organizations to identify specific considerations required for people with different types of disabilities.
The consultations will continue through the end of August.
The city plans to explain the proposed facilities and accessibility measures in November after incorporating the findings from the hearings.
