FUKUOKA - Elementary school students in Fukuoka got a hands-on lesson in the importance of taxes on September 11, lifting a 10-kilogram replica of 100 million yen as part of a class designed to show how public money supports society.
The tax education class was held at Kamo Elementary School in Fukuoka City's Sawara Ward by the city government and other organizers.
The program is intended to help children who will eventually take responsibility for society understand the importance of taxes. City officials explained how the tax system works and how much tax revenue is spent on various public services.
To give students a sense of the scale and weight of large sums of money, organizers brought in a replica of 100 million yen weighing about 10 kilograms.
Several students worked together to lift it. "I can't do it. It's really heavy. Super heavy," one student said. Another said, "It was really heavy."
The exercise also prompted students to think about where tax money comes from and how it should be used. "Tax money is money collected from citizens, so I think it should be treated carefully," one student said.
A city official said the organizers hoped the class would give children a more positive impression of taxes.
