'Demon Slayer' final volume released

Dec 06 (NHK) - The final volume in book form of the Japanese hit manga series "Kimetsu no Yaiba," or "Demon Slayer," has been released, attracting many fans to bookshops.

The manga is a story set in Japan about a century ago, depicting a boy who fights demons that killed his family members. It had been carried in a weekly magazine through May this year. The animated movie adapted from the manga has also become a big hit.

The final 23rd volume in book form went on sale on Friday.

A bookshop in Tokyo's Shibuya district has set up a special section for the final volume, as well as the other related books.

Many customers were buying the books just after the shop opened at 10 a.m.

A man in his 20s said he is happy to get the last volume, and that he wants to see the hero's battle to the end.

A woman in her 30s said she will miss the manga and will read the last volume thoroughly.

The publisher of the series, Shueisha, says the manga's last volume had an initial print run of nearly 4 million copies. The firm also says a total of 120 million copies of the series have been issued, including digital versions.

Nagahama Toshihiro, Executive Chief Economist at the Dai-ichi Life Research Institute, says "Kimetsu no Yaiba" has generated economic benefits worth about 2.6 billion dollars from the sales of books, character goods, and tickets at movie theaters.
