Sweltering heat continues in Japan

Jul 23 (NHK) - Sweltering heat continues to shroud most of Japan. Temperatures reached nearly 40 degrees Celsius in some places on Sunday.

The Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system brought blistering sunshine to western and eastern Japan.

Gujo City in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, had a daytime high of 39.8 degrees. This temperature has now been recorded twice in the city since recordkeeping began in 1978.

Daytime temperatures reached 39.5 degrees in Nagoya, 38.8 in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, 38.6 in Isezaki, Gunma Prefecture, and 38.2 in Tottori City.

It was the ninth day in a row that temperatures have exceeded 38 degrees in parts of Japan.

On Sunday, 237 observation points -- the largest number so far this season -- recorded temperatures of more than 35 degrees. The daytime high in central Tokyo was 35.6.

Overnight lows on Sunday are expected to remain above 25 degrees in western and eastern Japan.

The heatwave will continue on Monday. Daytime highs of 39 degrees are forecast for the cities of Nagoya, Gifu, and Saitama Prefecture's Kumagaya. The high for central Tokyo is expected to be 36 degrees.
