Jul 08 (NHK) - A log boat set off from Taiwan on Sunday on a journey of more than 200 kilometers to Yonaguni Island in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan.
Researchers at Japan's National Museum of Nature and Science have been trying for three years to prove the theory that people migrated from Taiwan to Okinawa some 30,000 years ago. Previous attempts using a grass boat and a bamboo raft all failed.
The museum says the log boat left the east coast of Taiwan around 1:30 PM, local time, on Sunday.
The five people on the boat will use the sun and stars for navigation. They are expected to reach Yonaguni Island in 30 to 40 hours.
