Honda to stop making NSX luxury sports car

Aug 05 (NHK) - Japanese automaker Honda has announced it will stop producing its NSX luxury sports car in December next year.

The decision comes as automakers around the world are speeding up efforts to develop cleaner cars to cut carbon output.

The first-generation NSX went on sale in 1990 and quickly became popular as a luxury sports car. But Honda stopped producing it at one point due to stronger environmental rules.

A second-generation NSX introduced in 2016 became the current hybrid model.

In explaining the decision to end production, Honda said the car has fulfilled its role of promoting the company's brand through technological innovation and motor sports activities.

Honda has set a goal of making all of its vehicles that go on sale in 2040 electric or fuel-cell models, in line with the global shift toward electric to slash carbon output.

The company has been reviewing its lineup, and has already decided to end production of the Odyssey minivan. It says it now plans to focus management resources on vehicles such as EVs.
