Investigation Suggests Intentional Destruction of Oda Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle

KYOTO, Jan 18 (News On Japan) - An investigation into the ruins of Azuchi Castle, built by Oda Nobunaga in his quest for unification of Japan, has revealed the possibility that the castle was intentionally destroyed.

Azuchi Castle was lost to fire after the 1582 Honnō-ji Incident and has been known as the "Illusive Castle" due to the lack of clarity on its full structure.

A study conducted by Shiga Prefecture found traces indicating that someone intentionally demolished the castle. The walls were found to be almost uniformly shortened, suggesting that the Toyotomi clan, who achieved unification of Japan, might have deliberately destroyed the castle as a way to show that its function had been lost, in an act known as "breaking the castle."

The investigation is set to continue over the next 20 years, aiming to further uncover the history of Azuchi Castle.
