Nagano, Jul 09 (News On Japan) - The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning to climbers, advising them to wear helmets and take other safety measures as volcanic activity intensifies at Yakeyama, located on the border of Gifu and Nagano Prefectures.
In a press conference held on the 8th, the agency emphasized the importance of recognizing Yakeyama as an active volcano and urged climbers to be diligent about safety precautions, including helmet use. Since late May, Yakeyama has experienced a high frequency of volcanic earthquakes, accompanied by gradual inflation near the summit.
Currently, the eruption alert level for Yakeyama stands at "Level 1," which permits climbing. However, the agency warned that the alert level could be raised to "Level 2," restricting access near the crater, if activity escalates. Climbers are advised to stay updated with the latest information.
Despite the heightened activity, the agency noted that any potential eruption is expected to be a "phreatic eruption," which would likely not impact tourist areas such as Kamikochi.
