Robotics Innovator Wins Top Prize At Japan Startup Awards

TOKYO, Aug 28 (News On Japan) - Cutting-edge technologies and services—including drones and robots—lined the venue as the Japan Startup Awards held its ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office on August 26.

The government-run program recognizes entrepreneurs and startups that have launched high-impact businesses seen as role models for the next generation, marking its ninth edition in 2025. Past winners include Mercari and SmartNews.

Prime Minister Ishiba: "We will do everything we can to back your efforts."

The grand prize went to Telexistence Inc., which develops remote-operation and AI robots under the theme of expanding the uses of robots. The company already provides robotic labor to companies that underpin daily life, from stocking shelves at convenience stores to loading and unloading cargo at logistics centers. By deploying robots beyond manufacturing, the company says it aims to deliver the benefits of robotics to everyone.

Hitoshi Tomioka, representative director and co-founder of Telexistence Inc.: "Our top goal is to install our robots in every convenience store in Japan by 2030. We have begun developing a humanoid robot, which is our next major target."

An Excellence Award went to Whill Inc., which proposes a short-distance mobility platform that includes autonomous driving services. In total, 10 companies received awards, including the Defense Minister’s Award and the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister’s Award.

Kikukawa, director general of the Innovation and Environment Bureau at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry: "(Startups) have grown into a major industry strong enough to pull the Japanese economy, and we expect them to play a vital role in strengthening Japan’s industrial competitiveness."
