CANNES, Sep 05 (News On Japan) - Director Mamoru Hosoda’s new anime film Endless Scarlet was officially screened at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 4th, where it received thunderous applause from the audience.
At a press conference before the screening, Hosoda explained the vision behind the project: “I wanted to make a revenge story. But not one that ends only with revenge—I wanted to create something unlike any other, a story that also includes forgiveness.”
Hosoda added that the character Scarlett, played by himself, is a young woman struggling to survive in a chaotic world while determined to achieve her goals. “Her determination and vitality are something I hope can inspire today’s audience,” he said.
Set in a fractured, chaotic world, Endless Scarlet follows the story of Scarlett, a young woman driven by the desire for revenge yet confronted with the possibility of forgiveness. As she struggles to survive and pursue her goals, Scarlett embodies determination and resilience, refusing to be broken by her circumstances.
Actor comments highlighted how Scarlett represented a fresh and symbolic female figure. One recalled being deeply impressed upon first reading the script, describing Scarlett as “a new kind of character who could be seen as a modern symbol.”
