Victims of 1985 plane crash remembered

Aug 12, 2017 (NHK) - Relatives of victims of Japan's worst air disaster gathered to remember their loved ones on Saturday, the 32nd anniversary of the tragedy.

A Japan Airlines jumbo jet crashed into a mountain in Gunma Prefecture on August 12th, 1985, killing 520 people on board.

The mourners started climbing to the crash site early in the morning to lay flowers and burn incense at memorial markers and a cenotaph.

In the evening, a commemorative service was held at the foot of the mountain. Participants, including local residents, offered flowers and lit a candle for each victim.

They observed a moment of silence at 6:56 PM, the exact time of the crash, and prayed for air safety.
