Opposition party Hope elects co-leader

Nov 11 (NHK) - Japan's opposition party Hope, led by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, has elected Lower House lawmaker Yuichiro Tamaki as its co-leader.

The election came after Koike expressed her policy to leave the party's management in the hands of its Diet members following the party's setback in a general election last month.

The vote by 53 party lawmakers was held on Friday. Tamaki won 39 votes, while his opponent, Lower House member Hiroshi Ogushi, got 14 votes.

Tamaki, who is 48 years old, is serving his 4th term in the Lower House. The former Finance Ministry official was first elected in 2009 on the ticket of the then Democratic Party of Japan.

Tamaki called on his fellow party members to work boldly to get rid of the politics of misappropriation and collusion under the predominance of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He said the party should be more reform-oriented than other parties, adding that he will spearhead the initiative.
