Japan to further exclude Chinese telecom gear

Jun 01 (NHK) - Japan's government is set to ask all independent administrative corporations and government-designated corporations handling personal information, to consider security risks when purchasing telecommunication equipment.

The move is expected to further exclude equipment made by companies such as Chinese telecom giant Huawei.

The request will be made to 87 independent administrative corporations, including the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, and nine government-designated corporations such as the Japan Pension Service.

The government is to make an arrangement on new guidelines with ministries and agencies as early as in June.

The Japanese government last year revised its guidelines for procurement of key telecom equipment by ministries and agencies to protect against cyber-attacks. It asked the entities to take into account not only prices but also security risks, effectively excluding Huawei and other firms.
