Jun 02 (NHK) - Japanese health officials confirmed 37 new cases of coronavirus infection across Japan on Monday, bringing the total to 16,949.
With the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined at Yokohama port added, the total of confirmed infections is 17,661.
By prefecture, Tokyo tops the list with 5,249 cases with 13 newly confirmed on Monday.
Officials say so far 350 infections were confirmed at airport quarantines and other inspection sites, and fourteen cases were found among people who returned to Japan from China on government-chartered planes.
The health ministry says 116 people remained in serious condition as of Monday, including one from the Diamond Princess.
Two coronavirus related deaths were also reported on Monday, bringing the death toll to 911, including 13 from the ship.
