Jun 06 (NHK) - A new matrix barcode system will soon be introduced across Japan for cashless payments using smartphones. The JPQR code will be compatible with more than a dozen independent systems now operating in Japan.
The communications ministry will begin accepting applications from retailers for the system from June 22.
Despite the rapid increase in smartphone payments, retailers in Japan have to obtain separate matrix codes from each cashless service provider to identify their stores.
The new JPQR code is compatible with 18 services offered by IT and telecom firms and convenience store chains.
Retail outlets that are planning to introduce smartphone payments will only need a single code for multiple services and can apply for one through the ministry's dedicated website.
Those that are already using several payment services can simply replace the multiple codes with the universal one.
The universal JPQR code will be sent to retailers from late July.
The Japanese government is encouraging the use of cashless payment methods to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
