Plan to reduce mobile fees unveiled

Oct 28 (NHK) - Japan's communications minister has unveiled a plan that aims to spur competition among mobile phone carriers. It includes measures to make it easier for users to switch to lower-priced companies.

The ministry intends to launch a website by year-end that will explain the procedures for changing fee plans or service providers.

It will draw up guidelines to promote use of embedded eSIM technology in place of SIM cards that simplifies the process of switching companies.

The plan also calls for customers to be allowed to continue using their original email addresses after changing carriers.

Introducing drastic cuts in mobile phone charges was one of the signature policies of Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide when he took office.

Communications Minister Takeda Ryota says that by structuring a healthy market, the domestic pricing level could get close to international standards.
