Japan supercomputer again rated world's fastest

Nov 18, 2020 (NHK) - Japanese supercomputer Fugaku has retained its position as the world's fastest.

An international conference of experts announces the world ranking for supercomputers every six months.

Fugaku took the top spot in four categories in the rankings announced on Tuesday. The results were the same as those in June.

Fugaku was developed by the RIKEN research institute and electronics firm Fujitsu.

In the category of computing speed, Fugaku achieved over 440 quadrillion computations per second, about three times faster than the US supercomputer that came in second.

Fugaku also retained its top position in three other categories -- performance in computational methods for industrial use, artificial intelligence applications, and big data analytics.

A RIKEN official said the institute hopes Fugaku will help solve difficult social problems, including the coronavirus pandemic.
