GIFU, Jan 16 (News On Japan) - Shirakawa-go village, one of Gifu's must-visit World Heritage Site destinations known for its fairy-like gasshō-zukuri style farmhouses, has begun an illumination event on Sundays, although tickets are limited to 4,000 people.
Blanketed in pristine white snow, the thatched roofs of the gassho houses began glowing in a warm orange hue on January 14, as the lights turned on just past 5:30 PM.
Thirty-two snow-covered gassho-style buildings were lit up by 108 lights, creating a magical scene.
The illumination event maintains a strict reservation system, with about 4,000 people able to obtained tickets in advance.
Only five more light-ups are scheduled, mainly on Sundays, but it is reported that tickets for future dates are nearly sold out.
