Whale Meat Goes Under the Hammer

Wakayama, Apr 06 (News On Japan) - Meat from a minke whale, which was 7.9 meters long and weighed 5.7 tons, captured off the coast of Nemuro in Hokkaido, was put up for auction in Taiji Town, Wakayama, on April 1.

As the auction commenced, buyers meticulously evaluated the quality of the whale meat, placing their bids in rapid succession.

Yoshifumi Kai, President of the Japan Small-Type Whaling Association, remarked, "We are delighted as the whaling season, which started on April 1st, has been going smoothly with a satisfactory catch, especially today's whale, which is large and likely delicious due to its fat content."

The first auction saw the red meat being sold for about 3,000 yen per kilogram, a price comparable to previous years. The purchased whale meat was promptly displayed in supermarkets.
