Rookie Police Officer Dies Following Judo Training

KYOTO, Jul 14 (News On Japan) - A 23-year-old female police officer who had suffered severe head injuries during judo training at the Kyoto Prefectural Police Academy passed away on July 13th at the hospital where she was being treated, the police announced.

According to the Kyoto Prefectural Police, on July 1st, the officer, a beginner in judo and a new recruit since April, was practicing "randori" (free practice) in the dojo of the police academy in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. During the practice, she hit her head hard on the tatami mats and was rushed to the hospital.

The officer was diagnosed with acute subdural hematoma and underwent emergency surgery, but remained in critical condition and unconscious.

Police reported that she passed away on the morning of July 13th.

The officer was wearing a head cap for protection during the training.

The Kyoto Prefectural Police commented, "We extend our condolences. We will ensure that such incidents never happen again by thoroughly implementing preventive measures." They are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident.

The female officer was posthumously promoted to sergeant on July 13th.
