Kobe to Fully Subsidize Student Commuter Passes

KOBE, Aug 20 (News On Japan) - Kobe City announced on Monday that it will fully subsidize the commuter pass costs for students attending high schools within the city starting next month.

The program targets students who reside in Kobe City and attend high schools or technical colleges within the city. Both public and private school students are eligible, and there are no income restrictions. Starting next month, the city will cover the full cost of commuter passes for buses, trains, and other transportation methods. Kobe City has historically had higher transportation costs compared to other designated cities due to its wide commuting areas, and partial subsidies were previously provided for costs exceeding a certain amount.

A Kobe City resident commented, "When my daughter becomes a high school student, this will be helpful. If commuting within Kobe City is free, it would be a relief."

This initiative comes as Kobe City faces increasing outflows of young families, influenced by Osaka Prefecture’s free high school education program. A city official stated, "Through this subsidy program, we aim to reduce the financial burden on families with children."

Applications will be accepted starting in January next year, with the possibility of receiving retroactive subsidies.
