TOKYO, May 30 (News On Japan) - A gas cylinder recovered from the scene of an explosion in Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward bore a stamp indicating it was manufactured in November 1964, according to investigative sources. The blast, which occurred on May 27th at a construction site, injured 10 people.
The Metropolitan Police Department reported that the cylinder had been buried underground and contained flammable acetylene gas. Investigators believe the gas ignited after leaking from a hole approximately six centimeters wide in the middle of the cylinder.
The site had been used as a parking lot for at least the past 40 years. Authorities are now conducting a detailed investigation into when and why the cylinder was buried.
The blast caused minor injuries to 10 individuals, including workers and nearby residents ranging in age from their 20s to 70s. Around 40 buildings within a 100-meter radius suffered damage, with some experiencing shattered windows and structural impacts. An emergency call reporting the explosion was made around 9:35 a.m., and a service vehicle at the site caught fire during the incident .
