TOKYO, Jun 03 (News On Japan) - As the number of groping incidents tends to rise in the summer months, maid café workers and local students gathered in front of JR Akihabara Station in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward to raise awareness and call for the elimination of such crimes.
"Chikan wa yurusanai!" ("We won’t tolerate groping!") was among the messages promoted during the event, held on June 1st by the Metropolitan Police Department. Participants, including maid café staff and high school students, distributed flyers to commuters and passersby.
The police have designated June 1st to 15th as a special crackdown period for groping prevention and are encouraging the use of the DigiPolice app—a smartphone security app that enables victims to report harassment silently, without having to speak out.
Toyoda Noriaki, head of the Manseibashi Police Station, urged the public to take action: "If you experience groping or voyeurism, speak up with courage. And if you can't speak, please use the DigiPolice app."
