Ishikawa, Aug 12 (News On Japan) - Record rainfall in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture has caused a section of road to collapse, sending three vehicles tumbling over a cliff and injuring three people.
The incident occurred on National Route 249 in Nanao City shortly before 5 a.m. on August 12th, when about 30 meters of the road gave way. A kei car, a trailer truck, and a passenger vehicle fell down the slope.
A man in his 70s driving the kei car suffered a broken bone, while the trailer driver, a man in his 60s, and the passenger car driver, a man in his 30s, sustained minor injuries. All are expected to recover.
‘Paving work had been completed, and I believed it was safe. I never imagined something like this would happen,’ said Tatsuya Akasaka, head of the Komaki town association.
According to Ishikawa Prefecture, the collapsed section had been built up with embankment soil around 70 years ago. No damage had been detected there even after the January 2023 Noto Peninsula earthquake.
The three vehicles remain at the bottom of the slope, and there is no prospect yet for reopening the road.
