Nov 09 (NHK) - US online retail giant Amazon has launched a line of voice-controlled AI speakers capable of understanding Japanese.
The company held a product launch event in Tokyo on Wednesday, with deliveries starting next week.
The equipment features artificial intelligence software that can search the Internet and control home electronics in response to verbal instructions.
It's gaining popularity in the United States where Amazon is the top provider of AI speakers.
Amazon officials demonstrated how to use the AI speaker to listen to music, get news, control room lights and call a taxi through an online link with a cab company.
They say they will consider adding Amazon's online shopping service.
Vice president in charge of AI development Tom Taylor said his company is planning more tie-ups with Japanese service providers.
Rivals Google and LINE have already launched their own voice-activated AI products in Japan.
