Heavy Rain Hits Akita, Bridge Collapses

Akita, Jul 26 (News On Japan) - Japan's northern Akita Prefecture experienced a torrential deluge Friday, causing major flooding and the collapse of a bridge in Kamikoani Village.

In central Akita, Kamikoani Village saw rivers overflowing, although water levels have somewhat receded. Despite this, a large amount of driftwood remains caught on a bridge, and the road beyond is submerged and impassable.

Drone footage captured on the morning of the 26th shows water spilling from the river, flooding roads and rice fields, creating a scene resembling a lake. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Kamikoani Village received over 120 millimeters of rain in just one hour by 9:50 p.m. on the 25th.

In another settlement about 2 kilometers away, the river swelled, carrying a large amount of debris and driftwood, and causing a bridge to collapse. Residents reported cars being submerged and moved from their original locations. This settlement also suffered significant damage from a river flood in August two years ago.

On the 26th, efforts to clear the driftwood from the roads were in full swing. In Kamikoani Village, 123 households are experiencing water outages, severely impacting residents' daily lives.
